These are a few of my favourite things:
Music. (Most) animals. Peppermint tea. The smell of rain. My brother’s AWESOME hand-made chocolate ice cream. What are yours?

And if people can have favourite things, can spirits, too?

Friday evening, several years ago. I was 13, tagging along with my parents as we shopped at the mall. We were in no rush, and somehow ended up in an antique furniture shop.

I fell in love with a vintage camera, of a model that I’d grown up seeing but which had slowly disappeared over the years as sleeker versions emerged in the market.

Once she saw my interest, the shopkeeper offered a 90% discount (I’m not kidding), and was practically pleading with us to buy it.

So we did, and I placed my new buy on the night table beside my bed. Later, while dozing off, I wondered how something so rare could be so affordable.

That night and the next three nights, I found out why.

Night terrors. A sense I was being watched as I slept. Vivid dreams of a pale, unknown face staring at me. A woman’s voice, singing beside my bed every night at 3 am.

After that, I placed the camera back in its box and kept it in the storeroom. I was disappointed but frankly, terrified.

Fast forward to 2013. As I grew, I learnt how to use my spiritual gifts for the highest good, and gained a better understanding of Spirit.

The camera had long been forgotten, still kept in the storeroom.

It was late at night. I was surfing the net and came across an article on the topic of antiques and how, sometimes, they come with spirits. Not the evil, cursed ghosts that the media loves to sensationalise – but the owners who, when they were alive, cherished their favourite possessions. Just like you and I.

For some reason, my mind drifted to that camera.
I’m sure its previous owner was waiting for that moment!:)

She practically CHARGED into my space. Shocks of light blitzed across my inner eye, over and over again, and each time I saw her rapidly drawing closer. I sensed her excitement, her joy – finally, Kelly understands me! – as she approached. I couldn’t help but smile.

This was no demon, but a little old lady, immaculately groomed with a hairdo like Lucy’s from the TV show ‘I Love Lucy’, except her hair was all white. She walked with an energetic, yet dainty stride: a very lovable spirit.

She smiled kindly at me and I thought to myself: THIS was the spirit that scared the s*** out of me all those years ago?

Then the scene changed. We’d gone back to the past, and were standing in a large living room, decorated lavishly in the Peranakan style. There I saw the old lady, seated on an ornate antique rosewood chair and pointing the camera – her camera – at a vase of pink hydrangeas beside her.

Welcome to my home, dear! My name is Eileen, she said.

Eileen clicked the button and took a picture of the hydrangeas, her face beaming proudly. Then she set the camera down on her lap and looked at it meditatively.

They don’t make good cameras like these anymore, she said gently. My son purchased this for me when he saw how much I loved my flowers, and how sad I would become when they wilted. Take photographs, Mum! He would say. Then they will live forever.

Eileen smiled fondly, her gaze upon the hydrangeas, the camera on her lap.

Quietly, she began to sing.
