The big news in the skies this week: Mercury stations direct on 20 or 21 November (depending on where you are in the world), signalling the end of this year’s final Mercury retrograde in mystical, mysterious Scorpio. For most of us, it’s pretty much over – but for those of you who tend to be more susceptible to Mercury retrogrades (especially those whose birth charts prominently feature Gemini or Virgo, the two signs ruled by Mercury), the post-shadow ends on 7 or 8 December 2019 (again, depending where you are in the world).
So we can pretty much expect issues with travel, technology, and communication to ease up soon enough. This gives us time to get ready for 2020 which, astrologically, is going to be intense for the most part – so we can look forward to lots of growth and transformation in the coming weeks and months!
Let’s get to the reading!
LEFT: SIX OF CUPS REVERSED. Whatever goal it is you’ve set your heart to achieve, whatever your dream may be – press forward, and don’t look back. The reversed Six of Cups warns against the dangers of nostalgia, of fondly recalling a past that’s gone, or that may never have existed except in your imagination.
The reversed Six of Cups also warns against entertaining unrealistic past-present comparisons that hinder your path towards your goals. Remember: everything changes. All because something was the case in the past doesn’t mean it still works now.
The message of the Six of Cups in reverse is: BE PRESENT. Stick to the here and now, because it’s all you’ve got. Focus on moving forward. Stop dreaming about the past – let it go.
Some of you may experience a blast from the past this week. Someone you used to know, or a dynamic/situation you used to get involved in may reappear. With the Six of Cups in reverse, think very carefully about whether it’s really worth your while to re-engage with old energies.
MIDDLE: TEMPERANCE. This week’s Tarot presents a better alternative to pointless nostalgia. With Temperance at the centre of this spread, you are advised to find your inner balance, and keep it.
Many people who struggle to let go of the past also tend to struggle with unconscious insecurities. Deep down, they don’t believe they have what it takes to achieve their goals right now – hence the constant yearning for the ‘good old days’ which, more likely than not, were probably just an illusion anyway.
Have more faith – in Spirit, in the Universe, and in yourself.
Trust that you have what it takes to overcome your obstacles and attain your dreams. You’ll do this by establishing your inner balance.
Balance is not a fixed state – it is a process, a skill, a journey of constant and subtle alignment with the Divine. It requires humility, patience, and flexibility. It calls on you to be healed of the ego wounds that cause so many people to fear their present, their future, and their own potential.
As the Archangel Gabriel finds His balance in the card of Temperance, observe how He is quietly, almost casually creating miracles before our eyes. The water is pouring upwards between the two cups; notice also that He has one foot on the ground and one in the water, yet He’s not toppling over.
The message of Temperance is this: your inner balance must be patiently created, but once you achieve it, you’ll become the miracle-maker and destiny-changer of your life.
This week, find your inner equilibrium. Be willing to adapt to change, and understand that you only have the here and now.
RIGHT: TWO OF PENTACLES REVERSED. If you look carefully at the two cards, Temperance and the Two of Pentacles, you’ll notice both figures are juggling two objects. And that’s where the similarity ends. While Temperance features the Archangel Gabriel, the Two of Pentacles features a colourfully dressed man.
The juggler’s gaudy attire in the Two of Pentacles represents the human desire to impress people with superficial, external accomplishments. When this card is upside down, all the more it becomes nothing more than a circus show, a poor imitation of genuine balance.
This is the card of the successful businessperson who’s losing his battle against debt and alcoholism. The working mother who’s battling depression and weeping in self-hatred and sheer exhaustion every night, locked in her bathroom. The worker who’s keeping up appearances at their current workplace but is desperate to leave, and looks for new jobs when no one’s watching.
The Two of Pentacles indicates a situation where you could be feeling off-kilter because you’re trying to do too many things at once.
Repeat after me:
MULTI-TASKING IS A MYTH.
PERFECTION IS A MYTH.
THE KEYS TO SUCCESS ARE GROWTH AND FOCUS.
When the Two of Pentacles appears reversed, choose the ONE most important thing you need to do, and channel all your focus into it until it’s done. You don’t have to get it perfect – just get it done. You’ll feel much better – much more balanced and peaceful.
Focus on what genuinely will give you the most joy and fulfilment. Prioritise ruthlessly. Stop pretending you can multi-task, or that you even enjoy it. Or even better: stop pretending altogether, and just be you.
GODDESS GUAN YIN DIVINATION
LOT NUMBER: 47
The flowers embroidered on silk look almost real.
A joyous fate arrives, bring you rank and fortune.
It is never too late to seek an honourable name.
You will pass the Imperial Examination on your first attempt.
(Trans. Tan Kelly)
Just like Lot 12 in the previous week, this is also an upper lot or 上签, denoting Divine favour and blessing. When this lot appears, you are advised to wait and watch for changes; they are imminent, and you are encouraged to adapt and transform once these new shifts enter your life (it’s a similar vibe to Temperance, which we were just looking at).
The traditional explanation of this lot indicates that You will attain fame and honour, fulfilling long-cherished aspirations. Your success is destined. This echoes last week’s lot 12, which explains that Your good fortune is predestined.
Again, it’s important to remember that you’ll need to take the appropriate actions (and refrain from inappropriate actions) for such good fortune to come your way. No, your success isn’t destined if you sit around and do nothing, if you waste energy on the wrong priorities (reversed Two of Pentacles), or if you set unrealistic expectations based on past experiences (reversed Six of Cups).
Once again: BE PRESENT. Only then will you succeed. The poem states that You will pass the Imperial Examination on your first attempt but darlings, NOTHING will happen if you don’t work hard, or if you don’t even attend the examination in the first place!
Focus. Be diligent and consistent. Learn and grow. You’ll get there in the end – the Goddess doesn’t give out upper lots for no reason. The traditional explanation states that When this lot is drawn, all is highly favourable.
The success promised in lot 47 begins with your choice to take focused, flexible action.
Have a great week ahead!
