We are settling in to the new year with our first full week in January – how’s 2019 treating you so far? We galloped straight into the new year with our first partial solar eclipse in the Cardinal Earth sign of Capricorn from 5-6 January. Capricorn is known as the Builder’s Sign, and this eclipse will draw our focus to the things we are building in our lives: in our careers, our finances, our families, relationships, even habits, for better or for worse… What are we constructing? What are our choices building us up to? What kind of future empires – or disasters – can we expect based on our current actions? Do we build upon what we’ve got, or do some things need tweaking, even dismantling?

Big thoughts to ponder. And here’s our reading!

TAROT

LEFT: FOUR OF SWORDS. This is the card of over-thinking, mental exhaustion, and stress. It can sometimes indicate a period of illness if your body cracks under the pressure you’re facing! When this card appears, understand that you are not weak or incompetent for needing a time-out. Also, it’s possible to carve time out for a time-out! Prioritise your health, wellbeing, and peace of mind, because you deserve it.

MIDDLE: THREE OF WANDS REVERSED. This was the middle card in last week’s reading, but it was upright then. This week, the reversed Three of Wands reminds us to look inward and focus on the little things. Think local, not global. Review what you can tweak to improve your own life for the better – this empowers you to conquer the world when you’re finally ready!

RIGHT: PAGE OF SWORDS. Good news could arrive this week regarding work. When the Page of Swords appears, you are encouraged to be inquisitive, to ask the right questions, and to be willing to speak up for your ideas, convictions, and principles. Trust that people are willing to hear you when you express yourself with discretion and in a timely manner (this Page can be a trifle tactless at times). Someone who is young or young at heart could play a role in events this week: they are sharp, quick thinkers, and willing to learn. Look past the occasionally brusque exterior and you may find a heart of gold – or, at the very least, good intentions.

GODDESS GUAN YIN DIVINATION

LOT NUMBER: 94

九十四

君子莫体小人为
事若差池惹是非
琴鸣须用知音听
守常安静得依稀

Noble One, stand apart from petty villains.
Their misdeeds expose their flaws.
A trained ear discerns the harpist’s skill;
Maintain your peace, and the status quo.
(Trans. Tan Kelly)

When this divination lot appears, you are advised to keep your distance from people whose lack of good character will inevitably harm you. Instead, seek out good people who, like the trained ear discerning the harpist’s skill, will recognise your true value and develop you to your fullest potential.

It’s never easy to walk away from bad friends: you know they’re not good for you, but they can be funny. Maybe they were there for you once when you really needed help; maybe they’re just in a bad place in their life now and you should be there for them too. And after all, no one’s perfect, right?

That may be true, and certainly it is good to help others when it’s appropriate, but if you’re in a situation where you’ve outgrown the people around you, you’re getting sick of their constant bullshit, their vicious cycles and dumb dramas are draining you…

Are these people really friends anymore?

And are you the right person to help them?

There’s a difference between a person in a bad place in their lives who would benefit from some help, versus a person in a bad place in their lives because they put themselves there… and who don’t actually want help.

Remember the partial solar eclipse in Capricorn: what relationships are you building on? How do these relationships structure the quality of your life, and develop you to your best potential?

The Chinese have a saying:

近朱者赤,近墨者黑
Proximity to cinnabar turns one red;
proximity to
ink turns one black.

Your environment – the people, places, energies, dynamics, etc around you – plays a crucial part in making you who you are. Thankfully, this is something you can choose.

Let your “trained ear” (your intuition and inner wisdom) discern the true worth of your relationships so you can make the best choices for your life.

Have a great week ahead!
